How Andrés Alarcón Found Community and Creativity at magier

Before joining magier, Andrés Alarcón already had a rich creative journey. Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, he moved to Berlin in 2014 to study design and began his career as an illustrator. After years of working as illustrator in different industries, and even in the healthcare tech space, he found his way to magier where he now works as an art director, helping bring clarity and creativity to client projects.

Andres Alarcon - Art Director at magier

How Did You Find magier and What Made You Say Yes?

The hiring process was refreshingly different. Instead of going through the usual rounds of HR interviews, I was asked to record a five-minute Loom video to introduce myself in a creative way. I decided to do a live graphic recording, drawing while introducing myself, and I loved that magier gave me that freedom. It felt more like a challenge than a test. That creative twist was what made me feel this was the right place for my next step.

What’s a Typical Day Like for You as an Art Director?

I’m an early bird, so I like to start my mornings with some sports before diving into work. By 9 AM, I’ve already prepped tasks for the clients and assigned work to the designers. The rest of my day involves writing creative briefings, jumping on calls with clients, and collaborating with designers, sometimes brainstorming ideas together to get into the right mindset. It’s structured, but there’s always space for creativity.

What Type of Design Work Do You Love Most?

Definitely branding. I’m really into typography and color theory, and I love how branding feels like solving a puzzle. You're given a few pieces from the client, their story and their purpose, and then you create something cohesive and meaningful from that. I even catch myself analyzing restaurant menus or storefront signs in my free time! It’s exciting to bring that appreciation for everyday design into the digital world.

Can You Share a Moment When You Felt Proud at magier?

There was one project where a designer I was working with felt a bit burned out. She had just finished a big project and was struggling to find creative energy. So, we hopped on a call and started sketching ideas together. It felt super organic and easy, and we ended up creating something really nice. When we shared it with the client, they were thrilled. That moment felt really special because it was collaborative and supportive, and it reminded me why I love working here.

magier Is a Diverse Team. How Do You Navigate Communication Across Cultures?

Even though we all come from different countries, we speak the same visual language - design. Everyone at magier is talented, and there’s a shared sense of humor and openness that makes it easy to connect. I also love the casual “coffee chats” we have. We talk about simple topics, but everyone brings in their cultural background, which makes the team feel even more connected. And living in Berlin, a city full of immigrants, I’ve gotten used to navigating this kind of diversity every day.

What Advice Would You Give to Aspiring Art Directors Moving Abroad?

Strong communication skills especially in English are essential. At magier, communication is a big value. Being able to clearly express your ideas helps everything run smoother. I also recommend building a versatile portfolio. If you can show work in branding, print, UX/UI, motion, whatever you bring more to the table. We really value multidisciplinary experience here.

What Helps You Unwind Outside of Work?

Morning workouts are my go-to routine. They help me start the day with energy. I also love cooking, especially trying new recipes. On weekends, I’m usually out exploring Berlin - bars, galleries, exhibitions, or just going to the cinema. The city is full of inspiration and I love soaking that in.

Has Living in Berlin Helped You Creatively?

Absolutely. You can get inspired by anything if you’re open-minded. I recently went to a ballet performance called Dogs and Gods and it completely surprised me. It wasn’t the traditional performance I expected. The lighting, the costumes, the energy - it was raw and emotional. I try not to read reviews before going to events. I prefer forming my own impressions, and that helps me stay creatively curious.

If You Had to Describe magier in One Word, What Would It Be?

Community. It’s not just about doing your own tasks. It’s about sharing what you’ve learned, appreciating what others create, and lifting each other up. Whether it’s during our monthly meetings or just sending a “congrats” in Slack, there’s a real sense of support here.
