Anson’s Unexpected Path to magier
From designing a haunted house poster in high school to becoming one of the standout designers at magier, Anson’s path has been anything but ordinary. Currently based in Jakarta, he brings a unique blend of creativity, intentionality, and international perspective to his work.
Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your journey before magier?
Sure! I’m Anson, a designer currently based in Jakarta. My design journey started by accident back in high school. I was in the student council, and we needed someone to create a poster for a Halloween event. No one knew design, so I gave it a try with Photoshop. That first poster actually got a good response – and from there, I got curious.
I went to design school in 2019 and later did an internship at a local agency before working at a company for three years with a very fast-paced environment and big clients. Over the years, I realized what kind of designer I wanted to be – someone who thinks beyond aesthetics, focusing also on strategy, marketing results, and output. After 10 years of learning, experimenting, and growing, I’m now at magier – and loving it.

What’s your background?
I was born in Hong Kong and moved to Indonesia about 15 years ago. My early education was in Hong Kong, where everything was mostly in English, so I’ve had a lot of exposure to international environments. I’m currently still in Jakarta, but also open to exploring other places in the future.
How did you first hear about magier?
I discovered magier around November or December last year, before you rebranded from Magic Design. The portfolio caught my eye, and by January or February, I applied through the website. The next day, Sina messaged me for an interview – it was so fast! Within a few days, I was already doing a demo week. I really appreciated how quick and smooth the process was.
What’s a typical day like for you?
I usually start around 9 or 10 a.m. because of the time difference. I do some solo work in the morning, then grab lunch nearby, and we usually have a team meeting around 2:30 p.m. I work until about 6 or 7 p.m., then hit the gym or spend time on hobbies. I love playing Nintendo Switch, DJing on weekends, and I’ve been learning Japanese since 2018 – with a bit of a break in between for college.
What kind of projects do you enjoy most?
Definitely visual identity and landing page projects. I love the balance between creativity and real-world application.
A lot of people talk about design, but they forget the importance of output and ROI – how it actually impacts the business or communicates with the audience. Web design really allows me to apply this thinking. Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved creating things – even doodled on the walls at home, much to my parents’ horror!
What do you find most challenging?
It’s not so much the projects, but how they’re briefed. A clear brief makes everything smoother. If a project is ambiguous from the start, it often leads to extra rounds of revisions and confusion. I’d rather have a simple task with a clear direction than a big project with no structure.
What’s something valuable you’ve learned since joining magier?
Balance. Especially with all the buzz around AI and new tools, it’s easy to feel pressure to do everything. But I’ve learned it’s about knowing when to lean into new technologies and when to step back. Clients don’t always want over-engineered solutions. Also, learning on the job – especially through real projects – has been incredibly valuable for me.
How would you describe the team culture at magier in three words?
Supportive, fun, and growth-oriented. Coming from an Asian work culture, this feels really different. Here, I feel like I can grow, get support, and still enjoy what I do.
What’s a project that stands out to you?
One of my favorites was for a client called Legal Fans – a platform supporting content creators. We went from design to development in just four days, and I even created the illustrations myself. It was unexpected how smooth the whole process was, and the client loved it. It’s also memorable because it was my first time working with a brand from that industry – something that would be considered taboo in Indonesia.
Can you share a moment when you felt proud to be part of magier?
I love the “wins” channel in Slack. Even small shout-outs or appreciation from clients make a big difference. As a designer, you don’t always get direct feedback – so when someone takes a moment to say “great job,” it means a lot. It keeps me motivated and proud to be part of the team.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining magier?
Be prepared for anything. Every designer’s journey is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all advice. But if you’re passionate and willing to keep learning, you’ll find your way. Design is about consistency and discipline – and at magier, it’s also about adaptability.
If your morning coffee gave you a superpower for the day, what would it be?
Finishing four tasks in under an hour – so I have time left to explore trends or learn something new!
