From Indonesia to Korea to Germany: Sonya’s Journey to magier

Sonya’s journey has taken her from Indonesia to South Korea and now to magier in Germany. With a background in visual communication design and a love for branding and print, Sonya is a key creative force in our team. In this interview, she shares what drew her to magier, the projects she’s loved most, and how she’s grown both professionally and personally since joining.

Can you introduce yourself and share a bit about your journey before joining magier?

Hi, I'm Sonya. I'm 27 and originally from Indonesia. I studied Visual Communication Design and started out working at a design agency, but I still wanted to learn more. So I applied for a Korean government scholarship, got it, and moved to Korea to continue studying design. I didn’t know much about Korea at the time, but the school was really well-known for design.

Before graduating, I had the chance to travel to Germany with my professor, and I really fell in love with the country. That inspired me to broaden my job search to Germany, and that’s how I found magier. I actually had other offers at the time, but after talking with Sina (the co-founder), I just had a gut feeling that magier was the right place. And I was right — I really love it here.

What does a typical day look like for you?

It’s pretty simple, actually. I live alone, so my days are usually just wake up, work, eat, work, sometimes work out, and sleep. But I really enjoy what I do, so it’s fun to me. A lot of my friends from Korea have returned to their home countries, so it’s been a bit more quiet. I actually filmed my "day in the life" recently, you can find it on the career's page!

But… that will change soon — as  I'll be moving to Berlin soon and will finally be able to reunite with the team IRL and co-work more – can’t wait!

What kinds of tasks do you enjoy, and which ones are more challenging?

My favorite client currently to work with is Paroswiss. I really enjoy branding and print design, especially when I get to see the final result in the real world. It’s rewarding to see people interacting with your design. For example, for them I designed an event booth, toothbrush packaging and booklets. After the event I could see pictures from people holding the actual things I designed - THAT is so rewarding!

The biggest challenge for me is the time difference. It can make collaboration a bit harder because if I have a question, I can’t always get a quick answer. It sometimes forces me to figure things out alone, which can be time-consuming. I do wish we had a physical office sometimes, to ask some things quickly in-between and because everyone is so lovely — I’d happily go in!

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned since joining magier?

Time management! Because of the time difference, I can’t always rely on the project manager being available. So I’ve had to get a lot better at organizing my workload myself. I also really love the international nature of our team — working with people from all over Europe and beyond is something new for me, and I find it super inspiring.

What’s been your most memorable project at magier?

Definitely Paroswiss, because I love the print and branding aspect. But also Plancraft — it might even be the reason Sina hired me! I made around 100 icons for them before I officially started during the demo week. The final website turned out amazing, and I’m proud to have contributed to it.

Can you share a moment when you felt especially proud to be part of the magier team?

Every time we have an all-hands meeting. I find them super motivating. Max and Sina (our co-founders) are always transparent about how the company is doing, what we’ve achieved, and who’s joined the team. It really makes me feel part of something bigger, even from a distance.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining magier?

Be stress-resistant. Deadlines can be tight — 48 hours can fly by — and you need to enjoy the hustle. Magier is built on trust and reliability, so being proactive and dependable is essential.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love watching anime and reading graphic novels. In Berlin, I was so happy to find a bunch of English-language graphic novels — it’s hard to find those in Korea. I also listen to true crime podcasts while working; they actually help me focus!

How would you describe magier’s team culture in three words?

Fast-paced, open, and effective.

If your morning coffee gave you a superpower, what would it be?

Designing faster — but with high quality! Either that, or the ability to read the client’s mind so we can skip revisions. That would be amazing.
